Tobacco Consumption

  • 11.9 percent of men and 0.7 percent of women (ages 15-49)use tobacco.1
  • Among youth (ages 13-15), 8.4 percent use tobacco products (boys 11.3 percent and girls 4.3 percent):
    • 4.8 percent smoke cigarettes (boys 7.4 percent and girls 1.2 percent), and 2.1 percent use smokeless tobacco (boys 2.4 percent and girls 1.8 percent).2

Secondhand Smoke Exposure

  • Among youth (ages 13-15), 25.9 percent are exposed to secondhand smoke inside enclosed public places and 20.1 percent are exposed at home.2

Health Consequences

  • Every year more than 2,600 Togolese are killed from smoking related causes.3
  • Even though fewer men and women die on average in Togo than in other low-income countries, 37 men and 14 women die from smoking related causes every week.3

Tobacco Industry

The 1.9 billion stick cigarette market is entirely dependent on imports and is dominated by three key multinationals: Philip Morris International (PMI), Imperial Tobacco and British American Tobacco (BAT). These companies together account for 87 percent of the market.

FCTC Status

Togo ratified the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control on November 15, 2005. The treaty went into effect on February 13, 2006.
